Why Landscape Lighting Should Be Designed at Night

You cannot judge a lighting plan on paper or in daylight. Here is how a night demonstration changes what you end up buying.

Lighting is the single highest-impact improvement most properties can make after dark, and the easiest thing to get wrong. A plan drawn in daylight is a guess.

See it before you buy it

Setting temporary fixtures on the property after dark shows you exactly what a tree uplight or a facade wash will look like from the street, from the driveway, and from inside the house. Fixture counts often go down after a demonstration, not up.

Hide the fixture, show the light

A well-lit property should not show you where the lights are. Fixtures tucked into beds and aimed with intention read as glow rather than glare.

Build in room to grow

Transformers and wire runs sized with headroom mean fixtures can be added later without tearing the system apart. Ask for that headroom even if you are starting with a small system.

Come back and aim

Every fixture shifts slightly during backfill. A return visit at night to aim each one is what separates a finished lighting system from a pile of installed fixtures.
